Cultural activities
The culture of the Tinerfeños counts with a tradition very well conserved in the mirror of time.
World heritage
In the north of Tenerife there are two cities whose centers have been named Unesco world heritage: La Laguna y La Orotava.
La Laguna is a student city with a lot of pedestrian zones. There you’ll find many touristic sights as well as restaurants and typical bars.
La Orotava is much known because of its famous balcony houses
and the carpets made of flowers just before Easter.
Pyramids of Güimar
Discover those five constructions in the shape of stair pyramids that are organized astronomically according to the summer and wintersolstice of the XIV century.
Museums
Discover Tenerife’s history in the Museum of the history of Tenerife, the Museum of Nature and Men or the Museum of Anthropology of Tenerife in La Laguna and Santa Cruz de Tenerife. If you are interested in artshead for the TEA (Tenerife Espacio de las Artes) or the Public museum of Fine Arts in Santa Cruz de Tenerife or the Iberoromanic Museum of Handicrafts in La Orotava. There you will also find the Casa de los Balcones. Find all you wanted to know about wine in El Sauzal (Casa del Vino). For kids and youngsters we highly recommend a visit of the Science and cosmos museum in Santa Cruz where you’ll learn by sensory experiments.
Festivals & Folklore
Tenerife comes up with a great variety of festivals where the Tinerfenos live their traditions with the dances, music instruments, typical clothes and the island’s memory. The strangest festival might be the the Fiesta de San Sebastián that is celebrated in January. There the Tinerfeños ride their horses to and into the sea (playa La Caleta). Another option is passing the Noche de San Júan in Playa las Amércias. At that festival celebrated in June all bad things are burned in a bonfire. For all the other festivals click here.
Carnival
Without any doubt the most important festival is Carnival. Thousands come to the cities to celebrate a whole month of carnival bands, cavalcades, costumes, spectacular carts, music, dances and of course the Burial of the Sardine.
